Activity 3.6 – Research Paradigms
Case Study: Scenario Three
Alternative energy sources have always included and affected different aspects of our lives from racial prejudice to social constructs. When conducting research into this topic you have to take into account how different sources could end up affecting people.
A critical race theorist might look into how and why the excess materials would negatively affect communities of color or why it would disproportionately affect people of color versus white people. They would look at this problem with the intention of analyzing why people of color would have to face the negative effects of green energy instead of the positives. A critical race theorist might also question how being surrounded and exposed to trash could affect a person of color's perspective/relationship with the environment around them and how they treat it.
Someone looking at this scenario through a conflict paradigm might look into how there might be a new conflict when it comes to the rare resources necessary to build the green energy resources. Considering how many higher quality resources that need to be used to construct their energy sources are rare, it could either cause competition between different construction companies or cause conflict between environmental activists and building companies. Another way they could look at this problem is how this will affect the economy, with the new energy sources being favored over traditional energy sources (oil and gas) this could cause a problem for many businesses based on the selling of non-renewable resources.
Someone looking at this through a structural functionalism lens might study the correlation between a person's health, the environment, and political factors are all linked together through this scenario. They might also study the negative impacts that could take place if even one of those topics is ignored or not taken into account when discussing the pros and cons of the new energy source and its construction
