Activity 1.1 - Environmental Science vs Environmental Studies

Differences between Environmental Studies and Environmental Science

Environmental studies is an interdisciplinary major that deals with the interactions between society and the environment. Within this field, you focus on the political, historical, and legal aspects of the environment. ( Ford, 2021) There are multiple career paths that you can follow when majoring in environmental studies. Careers like Environmental monitoring technicians, Sustainability coordinators, or Corporate social responsibility officers are all possible paths you can take. (Blaylock,2020)

Environmental science is also an interdisciplinary-based major. You focus more on measuring and studying the environment through the use of engineering, geology, and chemistry. (Kte’pi, 2014) Like Environmental studies, there are multiple career paths that you can follow with this major. Agricultural scientist, Environment consultant, and an environmental engineer are all possible career paths you could follow. (Yoder, 2020)

There are many similarities between both studies. They share the same field, basic courses, as well as the same goal. They both involve the improvement of the environment but the way they go about it is different. Environmental studies work on taking protective measures through the use of legal policies and studies of the correlation between human activity and the environment. Environmental science focuses on protecting the environment by finding ways to improve the environment and solve environmental issues that are currently happening.

CASE EXAMPLE: Deforestation in order to build new communities

Environmental studies majors would look for legal ways to prevent and control how much of our forests can be cut down. They could also take preventative measures by sponsoring a new bill that would limit future companies from cutting down too many trees. Another route they could take is by growing communities that contribute to the mass deforestation that is happening.

Environmental Science majors would measure the environmental impact deforestation would cause to the surrounding area as well as see how it will disrupt the ecological life in the area. They could also find ways to prevent as much damage done to the environment as possible.
